I’ve read a lot of X-Men comics in my time. Like a LOT.
From Uncanny to X-Men to New Mutants to Generation X to X-Factor. I read the fucking X-Terminators mini. I read EVERY goddamn Age of Apocalypse title from the original run (yes, even X-Universe) (But not Gambit and the X-ternals, because fuck that noise. Gambit sucks in any universe).
I can tell you things about Beast (and Dark Beast), Havok, Artie and Leech, Thunderbird AND Warpath, Cassandra Nova, Senator Kelly, Wolverine (including that period when he didn’t have a nose and wore a bandanna for… reasons), Husk, Bishop, Gambit (know your enemy), Sugarman, Random, Maggot, and about a bajillion others (but if we REALLY get into this topic I’ll probably talk mostly about Mohawk Storm because Mohawk Storm makes me feel feelings about things).
Anyway, I have a lot of X-knowledge and I still don’t understand how Magik’s powers work. Is she a mutant? Is it magic? I think there are demons involved? Why is she in the X-Men? Shouldn’t she be kicking around with Dr. Strange and Wong?
I don’t get it.
And yeah, I probably could have read a Wiki or even flipped the card over (or just looked at the back while I was mugging for the camera here), but what is this a RESEARCH blog about reading? No it is not.

Magik is both a mutant and a demon sorceress. Her mutant ability allows her to use the stepping disc of Limbo to teleport not just to places but also through time. As a child, she was kidnapped by a demon lord, Belasco, that was trapped in Limbo. There he began to take portions of her soul, corrupting her with each piece he took, and at the same time teaching her sorcery. (Really, you should read the Magik series, 4 comics, that were published in the 80s for the whole back story.)
Anywho, she eventually created a sword that was a piece of her soul and beat the crap out of Belasco, but decided not to kill him because she didn’t want to be like him, banished him from limbo and then left limbo herself, now seven years older (14 yrs old). She eventually joins the New Mutants, where she was supposed to be learning how to use her teleport abilities better, but really just had a lot of angst because she was becoming more and more evil as she continued to use not just her magic abilities but her teleportation abilities. Finally, there was Inferno, where she reverted back to a child and she was returned back to her parents. In the 90s, she caught the Legacy Virus and died. Come to the 2000s, and House of M happened. During House of M, there as a version of Illyana, when House of M ended, Belasco somehow back in Limbo, wanted Illyana back. So he resurrected her, but it wasn’t really her, more like a simulacrum of her (in Dark Child form) due to the fact that she had no soul. So eventually, the New X-Men (the new class of teen mutants) end up in the Limbo. Illyana takes a portion of Pixie’s soul, teaches her a spell to teleport, and creates Pixie’s soul dagger so she can kick Belasco’s butt, again. She gets back a little bit more of her soul and expels the New X-men and X-men (who came to rescue the New X-men) from the limbo. Eventually, Belasco’s daughter, Witchfire ?, ends up in the limbo and somehow has Magik’s soul sword and captures Illyana. The X-men and Pixie get involved again, and somehow Illyana gets her sword back and some more of her soul.  Illyana then goes traveling through time and stuff, finally coming back to where the Xmen are in San Francisco, to say she needs the New Mutants help to save Dani Moonstar. So they do that and save Legion. Eventually, some crap happens, people stuck in limbo from the Inferno incident open the portal to get to the Elder Gods, but Illyana gets Legion, who then rewrites everything, and gives Illyana back her soul.  That doesn’t fix her though, because in reality she’s just a much damaged little girl in a woman’s body and is probably quite mad, as exhibited in the end of Avengers vs. Xmen. She is now a part of the Uncanny X-Men and her powers are as jacked up as everyone else’s that had any dealings with the Phoenix Force (‘cept for maybe Namor, which personally I think his true mutant power is “man slut”).

Doodles done at work during my down time.

Red,blue and black pens, a yellow highlighter and nice blue paper.

I see myself digging out my old Excalibur issues in the near future.

This is awesome.

Artist: Rob Liefeld

Illyana could have been back so much sooner. On the other hand, she could have suffered from LDS (Liefeld Distortion Syndrome) and died again soon after.

One of the few times I was glad Illyana was dead.
